ICYMI

Our own Dana Haggith wrote a powerful article, which looked back at an incident when she was eight-years-old. She finished a day of school, took the bis home, stepped off the bus and was smoked by a car.

With back-to-school in full swing this week, it’s a good reminder for everyone to help ensure everyone is safe across our community.

Here is Dana’s story: ‘I stepped off the school bus and was hit by a car’

HOT TOPIC

As of September 1 – a new by-law addressing smoking outdoors in Chatham-Kent parks, playgrounds, beaches and municipal facilities came into effect.

C-K is now smoke-free

It created quite the debate on social media.

Here is what people were saying:

Ward said on Facebook: “It isn’t safe for kids to play in parks in wallaceburg in the first place because druggies leave their used syringes all over the place, so, sure, go after the low hanging fruit which is smokers to make it look like you’re doing something. Also are the toxic emmissions from cigarette smoke even close to being equal to the emissions being created by the 15 car lineups at the Tim Hortons all morning? Time to get a grip on reality folks!”

Andrew said on Facebook: “Good luck enforcing this one!”

Greg said on Facebook: “Safe from car emissions… because all your stinky cars are doing more harm to the air and children’s lungs.”

Violet said on Facebook: “This is BULLS***!!! The government can collect billions of dollars in taxes off of cigarettes, control what’s put into them but, they’ll dictate to the people where they can and can’t smoke?…and no one finds a problem in this?”

Bill said on Facebook: “If anyone has ever tried to quit smoking, you know how hard it is. This is no more then harassment when one considers the methadone clinics paid for by tax dollars.”

Catherine said on Facebook: ” I know many times when I have been to the beach it was so smoky it looked like the smog over Detroit said no one ever !!! Nothing but a bunch of controlling freaky idiots . I’m moving to France where they live and let live lol”

Steve said on Facebook: “oh no its not”

Karen said on Facebook: “This will eliminate the garbage …smokers just flick there butts anywhere”

Judith said on Facebook: “When limiting smoking in public places you protect people from the dangers of secondhand smoke, create healthier and cleaner environments where kids play and are supportive of those trying to quit”
