Chatham-Kent council received a presentation by Don Shropshire, chief administrative officer at Monday nights regular council meeting

Shropshire presented about the service sustainability review process for his office.

Council directed Shropshire to increase his participation with local commissions and boards to enable enhanced reporting to council regarding the impact of decisions or actions impacting the Municipality.

Shropshire said he has “kept close to home” since taking over as the CAO for Chatham-Kent, but wants to become more involved at the provincial and federal levels.

“There are some opportunities there,” he said.

A motion by Chatham Coun. Anne Gilbert to narrow Shropshire’s participation to the Chatham-Kent Police Board, Entegrus and the PUC was defeated by council.

“I’m not comfortable with a wholesale go for it,” she said. “It’s the boards that should be driving the bus.”

Wallaceburg Coun. Jeff Wesley said he was all for Shropshire participating more.

“He wants to be there so he can see the bigger picture,” he said.

West Kent Coun. Brian King said the CAO needs to be in charge.

“The CAO needs to know everything,” he said. “We don’t want you in meetings.”

The increased participation is set to start right away.
