Rottweiler attacks boxer in Chatham

A 5-year-old boxer named Carter is recovering after being viciously attacked over the weekend by a Rottweiler.

Chatham resident Kim Babo, who works for Community Living in Wallaceburg, told the Sydenham Current her husband John Crombez was with her two boxers Saturday night. She said he was feeding them a treat outside of the Piggy Mart variety store on McNaughton Avenue.

“My husband walks our dogs every night when he gets done work,” she said. “A car pulled in beside him and the Rottweiler mix inside jumped out of the car and had a hold of my dogs throat before my husband even saw the dog, he didn’t even know what was going on. He got him right on the back of his ear, by the throat. The dog knew what he was doing.”

Babo said the owner of the Rottweiler did nothing.

“The owner got out of the car, did nothing and stood there kind of dumb-founded,” she said. “My husband was punching the dog to try and get it off of our dog. I have two dogs there, two boxers. This dog was not intimidated at all.”

Babo added: “The owner put him back in the car, my husband is yelling roll the window back up so he doesn’t get back out again and do it all over again. The man was pointing, pointing, one-minute, one minute and he got in his car and left.”

Babo said the Chatham-Kent Police Service and the local branch of the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals have been contacted and are investigating.

Const. Renee Cowell of the Chatham-Kent Police Service said the investigation has been turned over to the OSPCA.

“I can confirm that an incident occurred on Saturday, Sept. 13 on McNaughton Avenue E. in Chatham,” Cowell said.

E-mails to the OSPCA by the Sydenham Current have not been returned.

Babo said Carter is recovering, after getting stitched up on Sunday.

“The vet bill was $750, plus the stuff I bought the day before, so it will be $800 by the time it is all over,” she said. “He has stitches, about 10 or 11 on the back on his ear, like his throat. He’s on antibiotics, because infection set in within a couple of hours. He’s on pain killers and antibiotics.”

In the wake of the attack, the Pet And Wildlife Rescue group in Chatham-Kent launched a fundraising campaign to help off-set the cost for Babo and her family.

“I got a phone call to check out their website… so I checked it out and saw the fundraiser forum,” she said. “Well then I started crying because it shows a picture of him. I’m just overwhelmed that people who don’t even know me or my dog and are willing to help him. I cry just thinking about it. I’m not used to accepting help from other people, I’m usually the one trying to help other people.”

  1. this is very bad ! if i had my huge Eng mastiffs and they killed the rottie after he jumped out and attacked > we would get charged for sure > this person should be charged and made to pay the vet bill for this poor little boxer .hope the owner puts that mutt on a leash tied to something in his car !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. Sad very sad that and owner of a dog already deemed as dangerous ( the attacking dog in this situation) was indeed deemed to be a dangerous dog from a prior brutal attack very similar to this one but prior incident involved a Pomeranian .
The owner was given stipulations in order to not have the dog euthanized , as we see he cared not to follow the law and allowed a highly dog aggressive (proven documented fact) to be unleashed and in a car with all windows completely open enabling and exit then pulling up beside a person feeding two leashed dogs .
This owner will be no more responsible for this attack then he was the prior which was zero he paid not a dime and as we see did not do as he was instructed by the law as again another documented unprovoked attack maiming another dog a year later approx.
Again a responsible law abiding pet guardian is shouldering the cost of the attack financially and their pet is suffering physically and I’m sure mentally from this attack .
The dog with the irresponsible owner will suffer his consequence for this but what honestly beside the loss of his dog will his owner suffer ?
What stops him from again getting another dog and ruining him also ….. nothing!!!!
he could go out tomorrow and replace him .
I completely believe any dog large or small or breed can be dangerous in the wrong hands ,there are no bad dogs only bad owners .
So very sorry and sad this happened speedy recover sweet pup
