HOT TOPIC
A fifth straight Relay For Life event in Wallaceburg will not be taking place.
Canadian Cancer Society officials in Chatham-Kent confirmed with the Sydenham Current that for a variety of reasons, the decision was made to combine the Wallaceburg and Chatham events in 2015.
Here is the full story: Wallaceburg Relay For Life not happening in 2015
The Canadian Cancer Society is holding a meeting tonight (Nov. 4) to gather more feedback and to hear from the public about the changes.
People on the Sydenham Current and on social media were vocal about the changes as well, here are some of the comments:
Wallaceburg4eva said on the Sydenham Current: “Well, I won’t be participating anymore. Sadly, as a survivor of cancer, I’ll now be putting my time and effort elsewhere. Had anywhere in CK besides Chatham been chosen, I would have continued to participate.”
Mel said on Facebook: ” I think it’s time for Wallaceburg to not be part of Chatham Kent. Become independent. At Least then our tax money will stay in the community and not go to Chatham.”
Barb said on Facebook: “That sucks.”
Tristina said on Facebook: “Oh look!! Chatham is taking what isn’t theirs AGAIN!! Leave the Wallaceburg spirit along. You have yours and we will have ours!”
MaryLou said on Facebook: “Not a good move. They are going to lose a lot of teams. Being part of the local event with friends and neighbours made it special and knowing each other’s stories. Bigger is not always better. Friends who would pop in during the event to show their support are not going to drive all the way to Chatham. And people with no form of transportation are left out again.”
Lisa said on Facebook: “This is unfortunate. Not sure why this is necessary. I have been there for 2 years volunteering and i must say i did not think there was a shortage of help. I normally try not to get into the Chatham..Wallaceburg debate but i must say over the last bit it really does seem Chatham gets preferential treatment!! I wish the organizers at the cancer society would reconsider.”
DeeJay said on Facebook: “Sad to see a great event leave our town. Maybe they should have kept it here for one more year with the new changes. The new times is nice. Wondering if any other communities are having to move back to Chatham. And will be interesting to see what teams from Wallaceburg will go back.”
Cheryl said on Facebook: “Combine the events but hold them in Wallaceburg one year then Chatham another, then Dresden, then Blenheim NOT just in Chatham.”
Jennifer said on Facebook: ” How about we just become our own towns again? I too am sick and tired of getting the shaft in every department. It’s not Chatham-Kent, it’s just CHATHAM. That’s where all the money goes.”
Ali said on Facebook: “Yes, it creates a bigger event, however it’s another thing lost from Wallaceburg that Chatham has taken, yet again.”
Amy said on Facebook: “I don’t see how they say they can’t get volunteers. I signed up through their website 2 years in a row. One year I got no call and the next year I got a call to volunteer 30 minutes before they needed me which by then I already had plans else where. Last year I didn’t bother signing up to volunteer…”
Lou said on Facebook: “Instead of moving Wallaceburg’s event to Chatham permanently why not alternate every other year so everyone stays happy and the smaller communities don’t feel left out.”
NEW POLL QUESTION

This poll is also posted on the homepage of the Sydenham Current!

i am so sad about Relay for Life. As a cancer survivor, just being a part of this event in Wallaceburg left me with a proud and profoundly humble feeling, being able to share the track and the night with such totally dedicated volunteers, team members, survivors and friends and families of the brave ones who lost the battle. I am just very, very sad about this. Such a Hugh loss to our wonderful community.
So sad that Chatham can not secure enough volunteers for their event so they cancel the Wallaceburg event in order to beef up the volunteer base for the Chatham event. Makes no sense to me because most of the Wallaceburg volunteers won’t be participating anymore.
