A trio from Wallaceburg and one from Dresden are banged up, cut and bruised… but they’re already looking forward to next year.

Wallaceburg’s Joe Perry, brothers Alex and Matt Richie and Dresden’s Dave McCaughrin all competed in the World’s Toughest Mudder event in Las Vegas, Nevada over the weekend.

Perry had a sensational showing, placing in 50th place out of over 1,200 participants. He was tops in his age group, as he finished 12 laps covering 60 miles in the international competition.

Perry told the Sydenham Current he has been resting ever since the 24-hour long event.

“I’m currently in bed, trying to work up the strength to move,” he said. “You’d think I’d be used to this pain by now after the previous two World’ Toughest Mudders. Did I learn? Nah. Will I sign up and do it all over? Well duh.”

Perry added: “As soon as I get the strength to crawl to my computer I will be registering to do this again a year from now. I’m sure that will make me feel better. As soon as I can walk again, I’ll start training for World’s Toughest Mudder 2015.”

Matt Richie finished in 484th spot overall, completing seven laps and 37 miles.

Alex Richie placed in 660th place, finishing six laps and 30 miles.

McCaughrin placed in 794th place, completing five laps and 25 miles.

Perry said the Las Vegas course was grueling.

“The obstacles were harder this year,” he said. “I don’t want to think about the extra miles I ran in penalties. That wind storm that kicked up, took out a lot of competitors. At times the course looked pretty empty out there. I haven’t looked at the official stats yet but the rumour circulated out there that 800 people dropped out. That fact did boost morale for us still fighting through it.”

Perry said the course also included a 30-foot jump into water.

“That was insane,” Perry said. “Someone needs to be institutionalized for coming up with that.”

World’s Toughest Mudder is the culminating event of the Tough Mudder global calendar, and is a 24-hour obstacle challenge with double the obstacles per mile compared to any other Tough Mudder event.
