A long-time advocate for the Sydenham Campus is going to bat once again for Wallaceburg’s hospital.
Wallaceburg Coun. Jeff Wesley, who is the current chairperson of the Sydenham District Hospital and the vice-chair of the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance, is making a presentation on January 28 to the standing committee on finance and economic affairs.
“The presentation will be centred around local health care and in particular with Sydenham District Hospital and the need to move forward with a final resolution,” Wesley said.
Wesley is pushing for a provincial decision to fund the Imagine Project.
At its proposed completion, the Imagine Project would see a brand new hospital built in Wallaceburg and upgrades at both hospital sites in Chatham.
“The communities in the catchment area of Sydenham District Hospital built and paid for our original hospital,” Wesley said. “We know how to get the job done and we are ready to get to work… but we need to be given the green light.”
The project would also see a “campus of care” format in the community, in coordination with the Chatham-Kent Community Health Centre and the Lambton-Kent Canadian Mental Health Association.
Wesley said the project has the approval of the Sydenham District Hospital Board, Chatham-Kent Health Alliance and the Erie St. Clair LHIN.
“We are waiting for a response from the Ministry of Health,” he said.
The original proposal was filed with the LHIN and the Ministry of Health back in January of 2012.

Terrific work by Jeff Wesley in pushing the envelope on this critical issue!
We don’t need a new hospital, all we need is what Chatham took back. It’s time Wallaceburg get something the people payed for and never got. Are hospital was one of the best and could be again if given the chance it deserves.
I am sure the people of Wallaceburg would do anything you needed Jeff to back you up if we could be guaranteed a Hospital of some discription. A new site closer to Chatham to make it convenient for all if that is what it will take. Dr’s that service Chatham Kent should be made to use all the Chatham Kent facilities. These clinics like the one on Dufferin Ave in Wallaceburg are to be used for people with issues. Don’t all people deserve to have a family Dr? Someone say fundraisers? Good luck Jeff You have always had our community front and center. Thanks for all you do.
