Walking bridge tender set to be awarded

A company from St. Mary’s has been chosen to complete the work on Wallaceburg’s walking bridge.

McLean Taylor Construction Ltd. is set to be handed the reigns to the downtown Wallaceburg project, after entering a bid of $540,419.07 to complete the work on the L.O. Stonehouse Memorial Walk Bridge.

Staff is also recommending that the total project cost of $658,813.65 to be funded from the reserve transfer for infrastructure bridge backlog.

After being placed on the potential chopping block during a service review process in 2013, council earmarked $500,000 for the bridge rehabilitation during last years budget process.

The community stepped up to the plate to offer help with the project as well, as many local business owners offered their services and supplies to assist.

Dillon Consulting Ltd. of Chatham was brought on board as consultants for the project.

They determined that the structure’s north abutment and pier would be “rehabilitated and replaced with a single span prefabricated pedestrian steel truss bridge with a walkway width of 1.83 metres,” a staff report indicates.

Dillon Consulting reviewed the tenders put forward for the project (six in total) and determined that McLean Taylor Construction Ltd. had the “required equipment and labour expertise to undertake this project”, along with being the low bidder.

“Work may commence any time after April 6, 2015 with total completion required by June 26, 2015,” a staff report indicates. “There will be no conflicts with the WAMBO event.”

Council is set to vote on the staff recommendation at Monday’s combined regular/planning meeting.
