Walking bridge project will be a ‘fun’ community event

An elected official in Wallaceburg is thrilled to see the walking bridge project moving forward.

“When I was elected in 2010 this was a project that should have been completed in 2009,” said Wallaceburg Coun. Jeff Wesley.

“I had hoped it would have been completed in 2014, but I am glad with a bit of stubbornness and perseverance along with fantastic support from the community and Chatham Kent officials that work is finally getting underway.”

Council will vote on Monday for a tender award that is being recommended by staff for McLean Taylor Construction Ltd. of St. Mary’s to undertake the project.

“The approval on Monday is a formality and fabrication of the new span will start right away with on site work to begin in April and full completion by the end of June,” Wesley said.

The L.O. Stonehouse Memorial Walk Bridge had been on a list for possible divestment back in 2013, but a motion passed during last years budget sessions for $500,000 to be earmarked for the bridge rehabilitation.

Wesley said it will more than just the walking bridge being improved.

“The BIA and local volunteers and donations will be working with the contractor to accomplish a lot more than just a new span for the walkway – it will be a community event that will be fun,” Wesley said.

Staff is also recommending that the total project cost of $658,813.65 to be funded from the reserve transfer for infrastructure bridge backlog.

  1. is there going to be something to replace the walking bridge when the construction start’s for the people to walk across so there do not have to use the other to bridges to get across because if so you may see problems coming up

    • The logistics and finances behind a temporary structure to accommodate foot traffic are not remotely feasible. Having to get around temporary detours is a way of life.
This structure being renovated is a blessing and big win for the town, please stop with the petty complaints.
