The Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services has recently introduced a strategy to reduce crime by increasing the overall health of communities in Ontario.
The plan is currently in its pilot stage.
Six communities have been chosen to participate in this approach, with the Municipality of Chatham-Kent being one.
The goal of this project is to bring various human sectors together that are already doing great work in our community in a collaborative fashion to address the root causes of crime and social disorder, to increase safety and well-being in our community.
In staying true to our mission of making Chatham-Kent the safest place in Ontario and our commitment to the Ministry’s plan, the Chatham-Kent Police Service has recently established the ‘Community Mobilization’ Section.
This section is dedicated to uniting with other community agencies to improve the health and safety of the citizens of Chatham-Kent.
The focus of this section is to identify and assist citizens who are potentially at risk prior to police involvement; to encourage the community to engage in the improvement and development of the neighbourhoods in which they live; and strive for a healthier and safer community.
The ‘Community Mobilization’ Section is made up of two Constables.
The officers assigned to this section act as community contacts for their assigned areas.
They liaison with members of Municipal Council, local boards, chambers of commerce, business improvement associations and other community groups (such as MADD, Block Parents, Neighbourhood Watch Groups, service clubs and schools).
The officers are also actively involved in the planning stages of special events to assist organizers in ensuring each event is safe and successful for the community.
