No matter what you call it, Shrove Tuesday – aka. Pancake Tuesday, aka. Fat Tuesday – is being celebrated across Wallaceburg and Dresden today.

Getting into the spirit was the downtown bakery in Wallaceburg – The Baker’s Affair.

“I’d rather do cream puffs than the paczkis,” said Pierre Zell, owner of the bakery. “Maple City Bakery does a great job with the paczkis and I want to do a great job with the cream puffs.”

Zell said his cream puffs are not quite as many calories as the paczkis either.

“It is fresh whipping cream, the strawberries are fresh and puréed right mixed into the whipping cream. It’s all natural products. It is fattening, but they are really good.”

For the occasion, the cream puffs are on special.

They are regular $2.19 and today they are $1.59.

Zell said there are six different flavours.

“There is a chocolate iced and an icing sugar with chocolate mousse, there is strawberry of the same with icing and chocolate covered,” he said.

“And there is a regular chocolate and vanilla and icing sugar vanilla.”

Zell said there are 200 available to purchase today.

If you haven’t stuffed yourself too much during the day, there are a couple of options for pancake dinners this evening.

St. James Anglican Church will be holding a pancake dinner from 5 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.

Cost is $7 for an adult, $3 under the age of 12 and under 5 is free. To reserve a ticket call 519-627-1302.

In Dresden, Christ Anglican Church will also be holding a pancake dinner at their hall at 350 St.George Street.

Cost is $8 per adult and $3 per child.

Reverend John Maroney of Christ Anglican Church said “Pancake Tuesday” is historically the last big meal before lent.

“Right before lent you were suppose to scour the house and get everything such as lard, fat and make one last real fatty meal because you are suppose to give up things that you like such as sugar,” he said.

“It’s like the last big indulgence before the days of lent when you are suppose to give something up.”
