Donation bin by-law not being recommended

Administration is recommending Chatham-Kent not get into the business of regulating what charities people may want to donate to.

This stems from a motion by Chatham Coun. Michael Bondy to create a by-law about the use of clothing donations bins within Chatham-Kent.

The motion requested that the proposed by-law would provide rules and regulations for new and existing bins related to location, size, visibility and contact information.

“Historically, donation bins have not been an issue other than the odd overflow issue,” a staff report says.

“Administration does not recommend getting involved in deciding which charities should be recipients of donations from members of the public. A bylaw permitting some charities to collect donations through donation bins would favour one charity over another.”

The staff report says it has been suggested that there has been a recent influx of donation bins and it is having a negative impact on the area businesses that rely on the donation of goods to their bins.

Council is set to vote on the issue at tonight’s regular meeting.
