Looking for low income housing support

A Wallaceburg councillor is looking for increased support for non-profit low income housing projects.

In the wake of a Wallaceburg family being announced as the latest recipient from Habitat for Humanity Chatham-Kent, Coun. Jeff Wesley wants to know if C-K can do more for families in need.

“Organizations such as Habitat for Humanity provide low income housing for members of our community in need,” Wesley said at last Monday’s council meeting. “Chatham-Kent, through tax sales, come across properties within Chatham-Kent that have limited interest and/or value to others.”

Wesley added: “Organizations such as Habitat for Humanity can make use of such properties by building new houses that will bring in additional tax revenues, support the beautification of our communities and assist those in need.”

Wesley is requesting that staff identify appropriate properties on an ongoing basis that can be provided at municipal cost to non-profit low income housing projects.

Wesley brought forward the notice of motion on Monday, and it is set to be discussed and voted on at the combined meeting tonight (April 27) in Chatham.
