Preparations are underway for the annual Sydenham Challenge Dragon Boat Festival in Wallaceburg.

Brian Armitage, one of the organizers for the event said there are already 19 teams signed up out of the possible 32 spots for the June 6 event.

“Although teams still have a little time left to register this could all change within a weeks’ time,” he said. “If your planning on placing a team this year please avoid any disappointment and let us know your intentions.”

Anyone interested in signing up a team can stop by and see Armitage at the Wallaceburg United Way office at 152 Duncan Street, in Wallaceburg or by calling him at 519-628-5456.

People can also register at the Wallaceburg Chamber office with Tina Fraleigh. He hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Armitage said there could be changes to the course this year, as work continues on the downtown walking bridge.

“With a two week head start on the bridge and good working conditions there is still the chance that the course will be open,” he said. “If not we have a great plan ‘B’ in place with the finish line in the same location as well as the loading area.”

He said the group is set to make a major announcement in the next few weeks as well.

“Even though mums the word right now what I can share with you is that a local organization is researching the possibilities of creating are very own app that you can download on your phone. This app will give you live scoring results and live video streaming right on your phone in real time.”

Armitage said the committee is partnering with the Wallaceburg BIA, the Wallaceburg Library and the Wallaceburg Fireworks Committee to provide family activities during the festivities.

All proceeds acquired from the race are evenly distributed between the United Way of Chatham-Kent and Breast Buddies.
