Athletes and coaches representing Team Chatham at the 2026 International Children’s Games in Taiwan were recognized during Monday evening’s Chatham-Kent council meeting.
The delegation includes members of the Chatham Pool Sharks Swim Team and the Chatham Wildcats Basketball organization, who will compete in swimming and girls’ 3×3 basketball at the International Children’s Games in Hualien, Taiwan, in August.
Mayor Darrin Canniff congratulated the athletes and coaches, acknowledging both their achievements and the opportunity to represent Chatham-Kent on the international stage.
“These young athletes are tremendous ambassadors for Chatham-Kent. Their dedication, teamwork, and commitment to excellence make our entire community proud, and we know they will represent Chatham-Kent and Canada with great character in Taiwan,” Canniff said.
Coun. Brock McGregor also praised the delegation and highlighted the broader impact of international sporting opportunities.
“Opportunities like the International Children’s Games create lifelong memories and valuable leadership experiences for young athletes. It’s exciting to see Team Chatham representing our municipality on the world stage,” McGregor said.
The International Children’s Games bring together young athletes from around the world, providing opportunities to compete while fostering friendships, cultural understanding, leadership skills and community pride.
Team Chatham is now preparing for a series of fundraising efforts to help offset travel costs associated with attending the 2026 Games. Organizers are encouraging residents and local businesses to support the athletes through sponsorships and community events as they prepare for international competition.
