Chatham-Kent residents are being asked to take part in a survey that will help to identify our community’s opportunities for energy efficiency and clean energy.

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent is working with local businesses, industry, residents and institutions to develop a Community Energy Plan (CEP).

The survey and information about development of the plan can be found on the municipal website at www.chatham-kent.ca.

“We, as a community, can better understand our energy needs, identify opportunities for energy efficiency and clean energy, and plan for the future,” said Linda Borst, the municipality’s building maintenance coordinator.

“A Community Energy Plan can help us to promote sustainable growth and economic development. Residents and businesses will be able to identify their own needs and find energy programs to assist them.”

The CK Community Energy Plan is being developed through the Ontario Ministry of Energy’s Municipal Energy Plan Program.

A community steering committee has been formed and workshops have been held with representatives from local industries, businesses and institutions.

“An industry, for example, might want to identify the best place to locate to make the most efficient use of energy,” said Borst. “A business might want to develop energy efficiency products. We are also encouraging homeowners and residents to get involved. It will be a community plan that will identify opportunities for Chatham-Kent’s people.”

The CEP community steering committee will profile local businesses and industries that have improved energy efficiency and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

Anyone with a good local story to share should contact the committee though the municipal website, by e-mailing CKenergyplan@chatham-kent.ca or by telephoning the municipal Call Centre at 519-360-1998.
