The Western Counties U15 Wolverine baseball team headed to the Mississauga South tournament this past weekend to challenge themselves against some of the top teams in Ontario but Mother Nature had other plans.
Friday night was the opening tournament game of the season for the Wolverines against Whitby. Greg Hay got the start and pitched very well over his 2 1/3 innings only giving up 6 hits, walked 1 and struck out 2. But poor defensive play by the Wolverines gave Whitby an early 10-0 lead. Drew Pepper was called upon to try and settle down the team and went 2 2/3 innings giving up just 2 hits, walked 4 and struck out 3, But the story of the game was the starting Whitby Lefty who only gave up 2 singles, one to Hay and another to Jake Taylor, as Whitby went on to beat the Wolverines by a final score of 14-0.
Saturday Morning was a more determined Wolverine team as they were up against the host Mississauga South Twins. The Wolverines started fast grabbing a 6-0 lead in the top of the first inning and then handed the ball over to Grant Spence. Spence went to work and took a no hitter into the 3rd inning and then Joel Pavey continued the no hitter for the next 3 innings as the Wolverines went on to mercy the Twins 12-1 in 6 Innings. The Wolverine offence pounded out 14 hits over the 6 innings of play lead by Spence with 3 hits, Jacob Breault with 2 hits including a double and triple, Greg Hay had a double while singles went to Drew Pepper with 2, Brett Allardyce, Evan Rogers, Kyle Blunt, Dillon Timperly, Joel Pavey and Jake Taylor.
After game 2 all remaining tournament games were cancelled due to rain.
Next action for the Wolverines will be Saturday June 6th at Fergie Jenkins Park in Chatham against the Windsor Star Majors for a Double header with a 1:30PM start time.
