The Ontario Provincial Police is urging motorists, boaters and off-road vehicle users to make safety a priority as roads and waterways become busier during the Canada Day holiday week.
Police say 164 people have died in collisions on OPP-patrolled roads so far this year, with speeding, impaired driving, distracted driving and failure to wear a seatbelt continuing to be the leading contributing factors in fatal crashes.
The OPP says officers will have an increased presence on highways and roads across the province during one of the busiest travel periods of the year, focusing enforcement efforts on dangerous driving behaviours.
Police are also reminding the public to report suspected impaired or dangerous drivers by calling 911.
The safety message extends beyond the road, with the OPP encouraging boaters, paddlers and off-road vehicle users to wear appropriate safety equipment, including lifejackets and helmets, to reduce the risk of serious injury.
The OPP patrols nearly 130,000 kilometres of roadways and close to 100,000 kilometres of waterways and trails across Ontario.
