The suspect in a high speed chase incident from earlier this week in Wallaceburg, is in custody.

Chatham-Kent police officials said on Friday, June 5 a 33-year-old Chatham-Kent man was located on foot in the area of Albert Street in Wallaceburg.

“The male was wanted on outstanding warrants for numerous domestic related allegations on behalf of the Sarnia Police Service. Following a short foot pursuit he was arrested and transported to the Sarnia Police Service, and held for bail,” Chatham-Kent police officials stated.

The entire situation started around 5 p.m. on Wednesday night.

Sarnia police officials say the incident took place on Fairview Place in Sarnia and involved two men who were initially involved in a verbal dispute.

“The 33-year-old suspect began punching the victim in the head and when the victim’s wife attempted to intervene she was assaulted as well,” Sarnia police officials stated.

“The suspect then went to his residence and returned brandishing a handgun. The victim was able to flee and the suspect demanded that the victim’s wife give him the keys to their van and she complied.”

Sarnia police said the suspect fled in the van, which was later spotted by an Ontario Provincial Police officer who initiated a pursuit.

“The pursuit was called in the interest of public safety as they approached Wallaceburg,” police officials said. “The vehicle was located abandoned outside of Wallaceburg and the handgun was recovered in the van.”

A number of Wallaceburg residents witnessed the pursuit, which went right through downtown Wallaceburg.

“The van went through a red light,” said Jenn Ritchie of Wallaceburg. “First I thought it was just some kid being dumb, but was driving really quick. I could feel the air coming off the van as it went past.”

The staff sergeant with the Sarnia Police confirmed with the Sydenham Current that the suspect has been transferred over to them, and is set to have a bail hearing Saturday morning, June 6.
