Dangerous thunderstorms, torrential rain possible

Update #2: The severe thunderstorm warning has ended in Chatham-Kent, but a rainfall warning has taken its place.

Rain, at times heavy, is expected.

An area of showers with a few embedded thunderstorms continues over extreme Southwestern Ontario and Southern Lower Michigan. The showers or thunderstorms will be very heavy at times late this afternoon and this evening and could be accompanied by some gusty winds. Local rainfall amounts of up to 50 mm will be possible.

Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.

Rainfall Warnings are issued when significant rainfall is expected.

An area of thunderstorms has developed over southern Lower Michigan. These thunderstorms are tracking slowly east at 30 km/h and are capable of producing torrential downpours giving local rainfall amounts of 50-70 mm. Gusty winds may also accompany these storms.

Take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches. Fast moving water across a road can sweep a vehicle away. Avoid driving through water on roads. Watch for possible washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!

Conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing torrential rain.

Thunderstorms over lower Michigan will track into southwestern Ontario late this afternoon. With a very moist air mass in place over southwestern Ontario, these thunderstorms may be capable of producing torrential rain.

Fast moving water across a road can sweep a vehicle away. Rapidly rising rivers and creeks can sweep away bridges, culverts, buildings, and people. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!
