Discovering the truth, one egg roll at a time

From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

I was attending a special breakfast gathering for pastors recently and the speaker said something that really grabbed my attention.

He said, “Truth discovered is more powerful than truth told.”

As a preacher, I deliver the truths of God’s Word every Sunday from my pulpit, hoping and expecting that the great insight that comes from the Scriptures will take root in the hearts of my listeners and help them in the course of their busy lives.

However, when I heard this quote it made me stop and think.

Unless one experiences the truth that is being presented, it won’t produce the results.

Many years ago as a young boy growing up in south Windsor I was taught this lesson.

My family enjoyed going out for Chinese food, but I always ordered the hamburger deluxe because I had it in my mind that I did not like Chinese food.

I had never tasted it, but was sure it was nasty and no eight-year-old kid would dare touch it.

My dad told me over and over again how great it was but I just wouldn’t budge.

But then, one day, I decided to actually try it.

Wow!

Did my taste buds ever get a pleasant surprise!

I complained to my dad for not letting me in on the secret to the wonders of Chinese food earlier in my life.

He just smiled, of course, and told me that it was something that I had to discover for myself.

I would now say the same thing to you about the Bible, God’s Word.

It has been proclaimed to you as the truth but you must open it and read its pages for yourself if you are to discover how it can transform your life.

Go ahead, take the first bite this week.
