Walpole Island police officer assaulted

Two men are in custody after a Walpole Island police officer was assaulted over the weekend.

On July 4, 2015 at about 6:30 p.m. the Lambton Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were requested to assist the Walpole Island Police Service with regard to a wanted male and an assault upon a Walpole Island First Nation Constable (FNC).

OPP officials say a Walpole Island officer had attempted to arrest a male who had been wanted on an outstanding arrest warrant.

It was at this time the officer became involved in an altercation with the wanted male and his brother.

As a result of this altercation the officer was physically assaulted by the two brothers resulting in the officer suffering substantial injuries, OPP officials say.

As a result of an extensive investigation, the Lambton OPP Criminal Investigations Unit has charged the two Walpole Island men with several criminal charges.

A 27-year-old Walpole Island man faces charges of aggravated assault of a peace officer, resist a peace officer, disarming a peace officer, assault with a weapon, and possession of a controlled substance.

A 20-year old Walpole Island man is charged with aggravated assault of a peace officer, obstruct peace officer, choking, disarming a peace officer.

The two men were held in custody and appeared before a bail court on July 6 at the Sarnia Court House.

The officer was taken to hospital, treated for his injuries and later released.

    • Because he was off duty and also they never put in here that he ran him over with the Walpole island police departments ATV and also tazed him… The younger brother was only sticking up for his older brother because he was hurt badly to protected himself… This office derserve what he got and I hope he gets fired off of the Walpole island police department because all he does is torment our community

  1. Is the police officer involved being charge for running the man over with the ATV? And whose atv was it? Was it his own or the police forces atv? This is something the paper forgot to mention.. also the police officer tazed and beat him up after running him over. And was off duty!
