Environment Canada has issued a thunderstorm watch in Chatham-Kent.

Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain.

Scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon in advance of an approaching cold front. There is the potential for a few of these thunderstorms to become severe.

Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes. Stay indoors when a thunderstorm strikes. There isn’t a place outside that is safe during a thunderstorm.

The Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management recommends that you take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches.

Environment Canada meteorologists will update alerts as required. Please monitor local media or Weatheradio. To report severe weather, send an email to storm.ontario@ec.gc.ca or tweet reports to #ONStorm.
