Things that make you go ‘hmmm’

wallaceburg sign

By Glen Turner – Special to the Sydenham Current

I think about a lot of things that make me go ‘hmmm’… for example: Why are there so many people not in touch enough to get their cats neutered?

My neighbourhood has TONS of feral cats now, decimating the bird population and breeding more cats!

Why are there so many squirrels these days? For the first time, they’re ruining my veggie garden!

Ever wonder why Noah and the Ark didn’t leave the ticks, fleas and especially mosquitoes behind? I can’t believe the mosquitoes around here lately.

Why oh why does the old town sign on the old municipal building STILL say ‘Wallaceburg – Pop 11, 684’ – we all know that’s not true, but yet it remains – since I arrived here many, many years ago.

What ever happened to the Wallaceburg Little Theatre?

Ever wonder why the municipal workers put up road signs that say ‘bump ahead’ and ‘bump’ on the roads, but it can take weeks or months to fix said ‘bump?’

The staff time to put them up, and the cost of the signs could be dedicated to FIXING the bump, yes?

In a town this size, on a major river in the region, why is there only one Municipal boat launch ramp?

I mean, the Sydenham DOES run the entire length of town.

Who do I talk to, to get the tracks repaired on Gillard St, just before the Municipal building there?

Hmmm.

It’s a car and truck shock-absorber destroyer for sure!

Are we becoming Americans here now? I see the attack ads aimed at Justin Trudeau have already begun, and the election isn’t until the fall.

Do people here actually think that kind of campaign tactic is effective?

And, last – can a small town have any MORE dollar stores, second-hand stores and re-sale stores?

We’ll see.

  1. Things that make you go hmmm. I think there should have been alot more to the article.
Cats , squirrels, ticks, mosquitos are not the topics or headlines that the article suggested with its title.
What about the lack of utilizing all the commercial land from factories and bisinesses of the Before free trade tore them apart.
What about the lack of effort in enticing businesses to set up shop in this area?
There was no thought in the comment about dollar stores , secondhand and thrift shops. They are so many because there is a lack of employment, lack of affordability for basics and the fact that it generally takes two and a half incomes for anyone to be comfortable these days. Those shops are a blessing to those who work more so than enjoy life.
hmmm….how many methadone clinics do we have ???? Hmmm…..
That is the reason for those types of businesses being successful and they do employ more than a few people who have to manage two or three part time jobs in order to make up a forty hours to get by.
We have all of these rivers , why is it not a matter of priority to create a tourist attraction through use of these rivers more often then they are. That would bring an kncome to the town with people stopping at the business along the river and downtown and surrounding areas.
A town will fall apart or fade if there isn’t some effort put in to breathing life into it.

  2. There is a boat launch down Baseline, just past the trailer park. It has a toll.. The one across from the old Libby’s glass is free. It took construction crews 2 years to “fix” Murray St. Bridge. It’s a death trap for the disabled.
