Fighting through adversity, Shaun Suisham-style

From the Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

Today marks the opening weekend of the new NFL football season.

One person who trained hard to get here but won’t be playing this year is Wallaceburg’s Shaun Suisham, place kicker for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Suisham sustained a season-ending knee injury on a fluke play in a pre-season game on August 9.

I sent an email to Shaun right after that unfortunate incident to let him know I was praying for him, and how all of Wallaceburg was bummed about the injury.

His response shows the depth of character this man displays: “Life wouldn’t be much fun if everything went according to our own plans. I’ll continue to grow through this. I appreciate your prayers,” Suisham said.

Someone once said that adversity does not test one’s character, it reveals it.

We can make our own plans, but it is wise to allow the Lord to have ultimate control over our lives.

Proverbs 19:21 tells us, “There are many plans in a man’s heart, nevertheless the LORD’s counsel – that will stand.”

Life is more than a football game, and Shaun Suisham has a good grasp of that fact.

Let’s enjoy the games and cheer our favourite teams on, but let’s also remember that things don’t always go as planned.

Sometimes adversity comes our way – just to keep us growing!
