How Rustics By The Bay was born

A Mitchell’s Bay business owner answered a calling to create one of Chatham-Kent’s most unique shops.

Initially, Leslie Janssens opened up a hair salon about a year and a half ago.

“I was always creative,” Leslie said. “Blair who is with me is always creative. We ended up bringing pieces in here and it seemed to be like a calling kind of thing. We are really enjoying it. Then we went out and found a few things and brought them in. I wanted to utilize this space.”

From there, Rustics By The Bay was born.

“The girl that was in here in the massage part had left so I moved the salon back there and we thought ‘let’s turn the front into something.’ We came up with the name because we are into a lot of barn board and drift wood… that rustic home stuff,” Leslie said.

“We decided ‘let’s take a stab at it.’ So it will be a year in January that we have been focusing on this part of the store. It’s one of the stores you come into and you are not just honing in on a couple of things. There is a little bit for everybody.”

Leslie said they are excited for their first Christmas event for the store, taking place November 7th.

“We have had a lot of people come in from all over,” she said. “A lot of people come in that have never been to Mitchell’s Bay before. I found that incredible.

Leslie said they do a lot of the work at home still and they also have suppliers that ship items in.
