Annual luncheon raises funds for Salvation Army

It was another successful day for the Childs family, as they held their 41st annual luncheon in support of the Salvation Army.

Mark Childs, owner of the Black Goose Grill in Wallaceburg, said about $4,300 was raised at the event held at the UAW Hall. Combined with some late donations in the day, approximately $7,000 was raised.

“I believe it was a success,” he said. “We may be down a little bit, but people wise, we were over 400 people, and we’re quite happy with that.”

Childs said they stayed with a familiar theme with the lunch menu.

“It’s what we call our homemade comfort food meal,” he said. “It originally was called a ‘poor boys luncheon.’ We’ve stuck with that theme. It was tasty, filling, a little bit of everything and I think everyone enjoyed the meal.”

Captain Stephanie Watkinson of the Salvation Army said the Childs family has eclipsed over $291,000 with their donations over the years.

So far this year, the Salvation Army is facing a shortfall.

“We’re at about 50% of our goal for the year and we’ve got 10 days left,” she said.

“Across Chatham-Kent, we’ve got another $225,000 to raise. This event is really going to bump up our campaign a lot. We are still looking for volunteers for kettles, as well as financial donations.”

Watkinson said people in the the Wallaceburg area can call 519-627-8257 to inquire about volunteering, or they can visit cksalvationarmy.org.
