Chatham-Kent firefighters responded to a structure fire in Unit #4 at 35 Orchard Heights Unit in Chatham on Tuesday evening.

Fire officials said the cause of the blaze was accidental and is being blamed on a suspected space heater operating too close to combustible material.

“A quick response by firefighters resulted in the rapid suppression of a fire that could have quickly extended to other adjacent, attached dwelling units,” stated Bob Davidson, assistant fire chief.

“Crews arrived to find a working fire in the basement with smoke extension to the first and second floor. No one was home at the time of the fire. Firefighters initiated an aggressive interior attack on the fire and a coordinated searched the occupancy. During the search an unconscious dog was discovered, and with prompt treatment the dog was revived.”

Crews from Chatham responded to the blaze at 6:25 p.m.

Damage is pegged at $120,000, while $300,00 worth of property was saved.
