Stolen SUV ditched, suspects arrested walking along 401

On February 20, 2016, just after midnight, a Chatham-Kent Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer was conducting patrols on Highway 401 westbound near Bloomfield Road and located an unoccupied Acura SUV parked on the shoulder of the highway.

A records check on the licence plate and vehicle revealed that they had both been reported stolen from another jurisdiction.

Moments later, a complaint was received from a motorist of two males walking along Highway 401 westbound, approximately one kilometre west of where the vehicle had been left.

Officers located the two males on the highway.

Subsequent investigation at roadside revealed that they were the occupants of the vehicle, which had run out of fuel. Further investigation uncovered a small amount of suspected Methamphetamine and Heroin.

The driver, a 32 year-old man from Brampton, has been charged with the following:

– Possession Property Obtained by Crime Under $5000, under the Criminal Code of Canada

– Possession Property Obtained by Crime Over $5000, under the Criminal Code of Canada

– Theft Over $5000 of a Motor Vehicle, under the Criminal Code of Canada

– Possession of Methamphetamine, under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act

The passenger, a 42 year-old man from Brampton, has been charged with the following:

– Possession Property Obtained by Crime Under $5000 (x3), under the Criminal Code of Canada

– Possession Property Obtained by Crime Over $5000, under the Criminal Code of Canada

– Theft Over $5000 of a Motor Vehicle, under the Criminal Code of Canada

– Possession of Heroin, under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act

– Identity Documents (x2), under the Criminal Code of Canada

Both parties were scheduled to appear in court to answer to the charges.
