Wallaceburg Madison Broad finished in 6th place in the ‘B’ final of the 100-metre backstroke on Wednesday evening at the Olympic trials in Toronto. Overall, the 15-year-old Chatham Y Pool Sharks swimmer placed 16th in the event.

“It was a great swim,” her coach Kyle Pinsonneault told the Sydenham Current.

“She flipped first at the 50 meters with a 29.80. Overall she took off almost a half a second from her morning swim. I am very proud on how she stepped up to the plate and competed.”

Broad finished with a time of 1:02.93 in the ‘B’ final. Here are the full results from the division:

Pinsonneault said the experience for Broad has been great.

“This is Maddy’s first Olympic trials and her first Olympic trials final,” he said.

“This is an amazing experience for her as she is only 15 years old and now will have four years to learn and experience more to be ready for 2020. Again, I am one proud coach on how she has done thus far.”

Broad isn’t finished at the Olympic Trials quite yet, as she will be competing in the 200-metre backstroke on Sunday.

“We will be here training daily and preparing for the 200 back,” Pinsonneault said.

“This is huge for her. I am expecting a great 200 back on Sunday.”
