Update: Investigation underway at Stealth Metal

Black smoke could be seen from Chatham after an afternoon blaze at Stealth Metal in Wallaceburg.

Wallaceburg firefighters were called to the blaze at the recycle yard located at 100 Mason Street at around at 12:20 p.m.

“Thick black smoke could be seen from Chatham 26 km away,” stated Ric Scharf, assistant Fire Chief.

“Firefighters responded and had the blaze under control within 15 minutes and then had to eliminate spot fires throughout.”

Scharf said one school in the area was sheltering students in-place until the fire was under control.

“There were no reported injuries at this time,” Scharf said.

The investigation is underway and a cause for the blaze is not known at this time.

The damage estimate is also unknown, however over $1 million in property was saved, Scharf said.

Scharf said crews responded from Wallaceburg Station #3, Chatham Station #2 and North Chatham Station #5.
