Music and art collide in Port Lambton

The artistic and musical talents of students at Sacred Heart Catholic School in Port Lambton was on full display on Friday.

Bev Vanier, the music teacher at the school, said students from every grade have been preparing songs in music class throughout the year, and they had an opportunity to showcase their skills to their friends and family at a Show and Share held in the back courtyard.

“Parents, grandparents, family, friends, whoever wanted to join us and could join us,” she said.

“A lot of times we prep all year and have a nice wonderful Christmas concert, but it is nice to share that excitement and joy in the springtime as well. Share their accomplishments.”

Vanier added: “Every class showcased something, there are some classes that come together. There is singing, there is instruments, there is recorder playing, everything.”

Vanier said the idea is derived from the ‘Music Monday’ concept, where people all across the country sing the same song, at the same time.

“The idea was so anybody could go outside and hear music being played,” she said.

Coinciding with the Show and Share outside, the Grade 5/6 students at the school created a 3D Pop Art Museum inside the gymnasium.

“Since January, the kids have been learning about what popular art means, they’ve learned about some of the artists and they experience the different mediums, such as paper cut outs, painting, markers, pencil crayons, etc.,” said Tracy Verstraeten, a teacher at the school.

“At the end, their job was the create a 3D Pop Art piece that represented them. It showed their values, what they thought was important. When you look around you see lots of different things, such as sports, but you see a lot of kids included their faith and their family and things like that. Some kids have their own personal retreat, which is their backyard and they were willing to show what that looked like.”

Verstraeten said the kids have been working on this for about a month.

“They’ve been reflecting on it and we thought it was important since we’ve got the Show and Share going on outside, we thought this was a perfect place to showcase it,” she said.

“They get to see what it is like to be part of a museum… some of them have their exhibits roped off, to make it an authentic experience for the kids.”
