The Family Centre in Wallaceburg had some flooding issues at their University Ave. location the past couple of days. However, they are set to be up and running by Monday.
Karen McDowell, director of the Family Centre, said they had to close Thursday due to extensive flooding throughout the building.
“We had a restoration company in all night Wednesday and all day Thursday,” McDowell told the Sydenham Current.
“We also had a environmental engineer in to assess the building before giving us the okay to open on Friday. We had a plumber come in to rectify the issue and he thought it was a blockage in our storm drains. He was only able to snake so far within the system and wanted more investigation into the matter, which was scheduled for Friday morning.”
McDowell said the plumber plugged the drain to ensure that there would be no more water in the building if there was more rain.
“Unfortunately the water found a different pipe to make its way into the building Thursday night, and upon arrival into the centre the staff found that we were flooded again,” she said.
“We were able to accommodate some families at our other locations throughout town, but we are only licensed for a certain amount of children at these sites. Families have been very patient and understanding in regards to this matter.”
McDowell added as of today (July 8) crews have dug out the storm drain and have found a major blockage in the pipe just outside of the building.
“The blockage was caused by tree roots from the trees in our playground,” McDowell said.
“We have had the restoration crew in again to clean and disinfect the centre. We have been given the all clear to open on Monday.”
