Man dies after snorkeling in Sarnia

A snorkeling excursion turned fatal on Thursday afternoon in Sarnia.

Sarnia Police officials say on July 21, at approximately 1:45 p.m., Sarnia Police and Fire along with Lambton Paramedics responded to a swimmer in distress at the very west end of Canatara Park Beach in the City of Sarnia.

Upon Police arrival Sarnia Fire and Lambton Paramedics had begun CPR and were transporting the 76-year-old male to hospital.

Unfortunately, the male was later pronounced deceased at the hospital.

From information received, the individual along with two other men had gone out snorkeling towards a sunken ship wreck in the area.

As the group of men began their return to shore the 76-year-old man was observed floating face down and unresponsive.

The other two men made an attempt to perform CPR along with the assistance of two nurses that just happened to be at the beach as well.

A post-mortem is to be conducted but foul play is not suspected.
