For the second summer in a row, children across the Municipality will have an incentive to wear their bicycle helmets.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service has teamed up with McDonald’s Restaurants again to promote bicycle safety and encourage everyone to ‘use their head’ before riding.

When an officer spots a child wearing their helmet while riding their bicycle, they may be stopped and issued a ticket. And what is that ticket good for? A free McDonald’s ice cream.

“We’re very excited to be working with McDonald’s again as this initiative was very well received across our community last summer. We want to reward the kids who are obeying the rules of the road and leading by example, specifically by wearing their helmet,” says Const. Renee Cowell. “These small interactions with police will hopefully leave a lasting impression on the kids and serve as a good reminder to all about the importance of road safety.”

Wade Crosby, owner/operator of McDonald’s adds, “We’re excited to partner with the Chatham-Kent Police Service again this year in an effort to help promote bike safety.”

The Chatham-Kent Police reminds everyone that by law, every cyclist under the age of 18 must wear an approved helmet. A parent or guardian must ensure any rider under the age of 16 wears a helmet. Failing to do so, may result in a $75 fine. Although helmets are not mandatory for adults over 18, a helmet can greatly reduce the risk of permanent injury or death if you fall or collide with a vehicle. We strongly recommend that every rider, regardless of age, wears a helmet.
