Lambton-Kent-Middlesex MPP, Monte McNaughton is encouraging residents of Lambton-Kent-Middlesex and throughout Ontario to renew their Ontario vehicle licence validation early.

“On September 1 the cost of Ontario licence validation stickers is set to increase more than 11% jumping all the way to $120, from the present cost of $108,” said McNaughton. “I’m encouraging those who have licence renewals in September, October, November and December 2016 along with those with renewals in January and February 2017 to take the time today and renew their plates early to beat the government’s latest price increase.”

As of September 1, Ontario drivers living in Southern Ontario will see their licence validation sticker jump from $108.00 to $120.00, and increase of 11.1%. Likewise, Ontario drivers living in Northern Ontario will see their licence validation sticker jump from $54.00 to $60.00. These fee increases will apply to both passenger and light commercial vehicles.

Also on September 1 the Driver’s licence original and renewal fee will increase from $81.50 to $90.00 (an increase of 10.4%).

“This money isn’t being dedicated to a separate ‘Ontario Roads Fund’, instead it will go into general revenues for the government to use as they see fit,” said McNaughton. “An 11% increase is way above the level of inflation and in this case is nothing more than a cash grab on the backs of Ontario’s drivers.”

McNaughton says you can pre-renew your licence up to six months in advance, meaning if your licence or plates are coming due between now and the end of February, you can get the lower price by renewing before next Thursday (September 1).

“From license fees, to hunting and fishing licenses, to electricity rates, life is becoming more and more unaffordable in Ontario under this government,” McNaughton said.

“These increases wouldn’t be necessary if it wasn’t for the money wasted on government scandals. I encourage all residents of Ontario to renew their licence and plates early and save a few bucks in the process.”
