Baseball dreams, horses in Wallaceburg, world news

Morning Coffee – By Aaron Hall

Growing up, Labour Day weekend was always spent somewhere throughout southwestern Ontario.

From Collingwood, to Listowel, to Kincardine, to Amherstburg and often times in Wallaceburg… no matter where I was, it was always spent on a baseball diamond.

The Wallaceburg Warriors patch would proudly be worn on our jerseys as we battled each year for the OBA title.

Often times, as a form of solidarity with our teammates, we would have matching hairstyles to go along with our uniform: mohawaks, buzz cuts and my personal favourite – out-of-the-bottle bleached blond.

It was always fun times and great memories.

Many local ball players would have been doing the same thing this past weekend.

I hope we have some gold medals coming back to Wallaceburg, Dresden, Walpole Island and area.

Here is a bit more information about the actual history of Labour Day:

Labour Day (Labor Day in the United States) is an annual holiday to celebrate the achievements of workers. Labour Day has its origins in the labour union movement, specifically the eight-hour day movement, which advocated eight hours for work, eight hours for recreation, and eight hours for rest.

For most countries, Labour Day is synonymous with, or linked with, International Workers’ Day, which occurs on 1 May. For other countries, Labour Day is celebrated on a different date, often one with special significance for the labour movement in that country.

In Canada and the United States, Labour Day is celebrated on the first Monday of September and considered the unofficial end of summer, with summer vacations ending and students returning to school around then.
