Celebrating ‘Pastor Appreciation Month’

From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

Did you know that since 1992 October has been called ‘Pastor Appreciation Month’ in the church world?

I happen to be blessed to serve in a church where many folks regularly encourage me with kind words, cards, and even gifts.

You may not realize it but your pastor or priest is on call 24/7 in case of emergencies at the hospital, sudden death, or a crisis counselling situation.

According to a 2008 LifeWay Research poll, the average work week is greater than 50 hours for more than half of all pastors and another 27% reporting 60-69 hours!

Hundreds of pastors leave the ministry every month due to burnout and discouragement.

Despite the fact that most truly enjoy their vocation, yet the stresses that come along with the work can weigh heavily and leave your church leader exhausted.

Taking an opportunity in this month of October to write a little note of encouragement, or bake him or her some cookies, or bless the pastoral family with a meal can do wonders to lighten their load.

The Bible says in something very powerful in Hebrews 13:17 about the responsibility the pastor has before God on behalf of the flock.

“Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, as those who must give account. Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you.”

Also, in 1 Thessalonians 5:12-13 it says this: “Now we ask you, brothers, to respect those who work hard among you, who are over you in the Lord and who admonish you. Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work.”
