Two police training courses held locally

Last week was a busy one for the Chatham-Kent Police Service Training and Professional Development Section as two courses were held in Chatham.

The first, a Critical Incident Management course provided 15 CKPS members the opportunity to train locally as opposed to travelling to other areas of the Province, where this training is traditionally offered. Members of Sarnia Police Service, Strathroy-Caradoc Police Service and LaSalle Police Service also attended. This mandatory training provided the members with the most current information and techniques on managing serious, critical incidents. The course concluded with a training scenario that dealt with a barricaded suspect with hostages.

Secondly, a Professional Standards course was held in partnership with the Chatham-Kent Police Association. This course brought together Police Supervisors and Police Association Executive members from all over Ontario to learn best practices when dealing with Police complaints and Police disciplinary matters. A special thanks to Mr. Phil DeBruyne of Georgian College for facilitating this course.

Sergeant Mike Thompson of the CKPS Training Unit stated: “Local training opportunities allow our Service to maximize the number of members receiving this training, as opposed to sending fewer members out of town. There is also a substantial benefit to our budget by not having to send members out of town for the same training.”

On Friday, October 21, 2016 Chief Gary Conn joined the Professional Standards course and presented the attendees with their course certificates
