Remembrance Day is set to be recognized across the country on Friday, and many people across the Wallaceburg, Dresden and Walpole Island communities are set to take some time to honour our veterans.

Walpole Island

An Aboriginal Veteran’s Day Remembrance ceremony will be held today (Thursday, Nov. 10) starting at 10 a.m.

The procession will begin at from the Children’s Centre and head down to the Veteran’s Monument.

All are welcome to attend.

Watch for photos on the Sydenham Current.

Wallaceburg

For the second year in a row, the community event will begin at Wallaceburg District Secondary School on Friday morning.

A ceremony begins at Wallaceburg’s high school at around 9:15 a.m., before a parade procession heads to the Wallaceburg Cenotaph.

A gathering and ceremony will then start at 11 a.m.

Dresden

A similar annual schedule is set in Dresden to honour Remembrance Day on Friday.

A parade will begin at 10:45 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion Br. 113 in Dresden, and will begin heading downtown to the Ceneotaph.

Legion members, community members and students from Lambton-Kent Composite School will be taking part in the parade.

Two minutes of silence will recognized at 11 a.m., followed by a ceremony. The parade will then march back to the Legion at the conclusion.

Schools

Our local schools always do a fantastic job honouring our veterans with different Remembrance Day ceremonies. I know Ava is excited to sing ‘Blowing In The Wind” with her classmates and Daylia is looking forward to a ceremony with her classmates as well. We’re looking forward to a very special ceremony at Sacred Heart in Port Lambton as well, watch for our story on the Sydenham Current.

The Wallaceburg Splash Pad committee issued a giant THANK-YOU to the Jackson family recently, after their stable of racers made a huge donation in memory of Glen Jackson. Overall, the group donated $8,249 to the Wallaceburg project. The proceeds stemmed from a race day that had been planned at the Grand Bend Raceway, in honour of Jackson who died in 2013. Although the event was rained out, the participants still made a donation.
