Text to 911 now available in Chatham-Kent

911

As of February 1st, 2017 the Chatham-Kent Police is launching their text to 911 capacity for those living in and travelling through our community with speech accessibility needs.

Texting via 911 is restricted in Canada for those who are deaf, deafened, hard of hearing or speech impaired (DHHSI) requiring speech accommodations.

Anyone with such accessibility considerations is required to register with their cellular provider in order to access 911 with texting abilities from a cellular device: http://textwith911.ca/en/home/

“Chatham-Kent Police has had TDD abilities to communicate for decades however providing text to 911 accessibility for those in and travelling among the community brings our Service in with the times of mobile devices,” CHatham-Kent Police Service officials said.

There is no launch date in the foreseeable future for the general public to have the ability to text 911 on their mobile devices.
