Behold, the power of focus

We live in a world where the so-called successful people are those who seem to be able to do many things at once.

It’s called multi-tasking and it is all too easy to burn yourself out trying to be a master of it.

Winston Churchill once said these insightful words: “You will never reach your destination if you stop and throw stones at every dog that barks.”

I see this every single Sunday at church.

I can be in the middle of a clinching point in my sermon, but let one person get up to go to the bathroom and a roomful of rubber-neckers lose their focus.

Commuters in Toronto can be so anxious to get home from work, but one fender-bender will slow traffic to a crawl.

We are a nation of distracted people.

Advertisers know that, too, which is why they cajole and tempt at every chance to lure you away from whatever it was you were doing and take their bait.

I used to coach my kids at the yearly Easter egg hunt to run past the first line of eggs and go for the haul at the back.

I explained to them that most kids would stop at the first egg they saw, and by the time they recovered, the best eggs would be long gone.

To be sure, you will likely have to give up something to get the bigger prize, but the power of focus will enable you to give up the lesser to gain the greater.

Jesus was the Master of focus.

In Hebrews 12:2 it says, “Fixing your eyes on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has set down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

We have already burned through two months of 2017.

How are you doing with your goals?

Are you on track to get everything done, or have you hit a snag and lost your focus?

It may be time to regroup and get your focus back.
