By Glen Turner – Special to the Sydenham Current
I have many joys in my life.
Some of them depend on nice weather… of which we don’t have much, this time of year.
However, one of my main joys comes from volunteering.
First and foremost? THE SOUP CELLAR!
Knox Presbyterian hosts a free lunch program TWO days a week! It’s called the “Soup Cellar”.
The other churches in town host one dinner a month, and kudos to all for their efforts.
Knox is kind special, though. Monday’s free lunch is a hot meal, with great food. Wednesday’s is basically
sandwiches and veggies, but both meals include fresh fruit, desserts, drinks, coffee and tea, AND there’s always stuff to take home.
Frozen pizzas, baked goods, and, in season, fresh veggies!
People are always welcomed to come in and see what we do.
Organizer Michelle McLean describes it this way: “It is what it is, it has it’s own life, and it’s meeting a need in the community.”
And, as I was told by McLean, going to two days a week instead of just one day was inspired by the volunteers who donate their time, not by her or the church staff.
As she said, the volunteers are great, and “they just like to give”.
Please keep in mind, though, that ALL are welcomed.
We have many people who come in for the companionship, the conversation, and to meet new people.
They don’t really need a free meal… so, they make a voluntary donation.
Very cool to see that.
Congrats to the Sydenham Current too. Aaron and Dana post the complete town-wide free meals schedule every couple of months.
