Wind gusts up to 100 km/h packed quite a punch on Wednesday across Chatham-Kent.

With a wind warning throughout the day, damage was caused in multiple locations and the power was knocked out in some spots as well.

Entegrus and Hydro One are reporting multiple outages across Chatham-Kent.

Hydro One officials say the Ridgetown outage should be restored by 3 p.m. today.

Approximately 144 Hydro One customers are without power on Walpole Island and about 55 customers just north of Wallaceburg are in the dark as well, Hydro One officials say.

Chatham-Kent Fire & Emergency Services officials said their crews responded to a high volume of calls on Wednesday, including over 20 calls dispatched in a two hour span during the afternoon.

“Strong winds gust (were) responsible for multiple collisions and downed power lines across the municipality,” said Whitney Burk, community safety officer, in a press release.

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials say all the first responders worked hard and as a team

“Thank you to all the dispatchers and emergency first responders in Chatham-Kent,” stated Const. Kelly Helbin,
public information officer.

“Due to strong winds, weather-related calls-for-service were exceptionally high yesterday. Chatham-Kent Police Service dispatchers and police officers work hard every day to ensure our community remains safe. Their teamwork does not go unnoticed and is much appreciated.”

The Blazin BBQ restaurant in Chatham was impacted by the strong winds.

The tall sign outside the 435 St Clair St. business was knocked over, and it fell on top of two vehicles (see photos here.) Details are limited about the incident, but there were apparently no injuries as a result.

The wind was also putting on quite the show in Mitchell’s Bay, which caused some minor flooding in the parking lot at the Mitchell’s Bay Wharf (check out our videos here.)
