Spring clean up at Chatham-Kent cemeteries

Spring is just around the corner, and Chatham-Kent cemetery staff is beginning to tidy up municipal cemeteries for the spring/summer season.

Municipal staff say interment rights holders are reminded that any Christmas/winter floral arrangements, artificial flowers placed on ground, or wreaths are to be removed by April 1.

Cemetery staff will remove and discard any items left on lots after April 1 to allow access for maintenance equipment and grass cutting crews.

“Seeding and leveling of interment sites will commence as weather permits,” Municipal staff said in a press release.

“We are working hard to repair the grounds, and we thank you for your assistance to ensure that our cemeteries look beautiful this year. We would kindly ask visitors to refrain from placing artificial/silk flowers on or in the ground during spring/summer months because they become caught in mowers and leave debris throughout the cemetery.”

Municipal officials say mulched flower beds can extend 12” in front of upright monuments, however crushed stones and border fences are not permitted in flower beds.

If you anyone has questions or concerns, they can contact cemetery operations at 519-360-1998 or visit their office at 25 Creek Road, Chatham.
