Black Heritage Symposium in Dresden

The Ministry of Education has declared the week of May 1 to May 5 as Education Week across Ontario. This year, the Lambton-Kent District School Board’s theme is ‘LKDSB Celebrates Respectful and Inclusive Education.’

On May 2, the LKDSB’s Equity and Inclusive Committee will be hosting teachers and students in Grades 5-8 for the inaugural Black Heritage Symposium held at Lambton-Kent Composite School in Dresden.

Participants of the symposium will learn about the importance of black heritage and identity and visit Uncle Tom’s Cabin Historic Site. The event will be led by LKDSB staff and students, with the support of community partners in Chatham-Kent, including Buxton National Historic Site & Museum and Uncle Tom’s Cabin Historic Site.

Guest speakers for the event include Natasha Henry, who will teach educators how to integrate Black Canadian history into the Ontario curriculum and embed principles of inclusion, diversity and equity in their teaching practices; Diana Braithwaite and Chris Whiteley will perform Sugar and Gold – The story of the Underground Railroad; and Nadine Williams, a poet, artist and speaker, will discuss the experience of experience of people of African and Afro-Caribbean descent in Canada.

“The theme for Education Week this year recognizes the Lambton Kent District School Board’s commitment to fostering a respectful and inclusive learning environment for our students, which in turn supports healthy communities,” said Director Jim Costello.

“The Black Heritage Symposium is a great example of the LKDSB partnering with local community leaders to enhance student learning about local heritage and building capacity amongst our staff.”

On behalf of trustees, administrators, teachers and staff, the LKDSB invites everyone to visit its schools to see examples of the learning opportunities which occur in elementary and secondary schools every day.
