The Ronald McDonald House of Southwestern Ontario was one of the charities reaping the benefits today as ‘McHappy Day’ was held at McDonald’s Restaurants across Canada.

$1 from the sale of every Big Mac, Happy Meal and hot McCafe beverage sold at the restaurants in Chatham-Kent will be given to the London organization.

Skylar Cogghe, manager at the McDonald’s restaurant in Wallaceburg, told the Sydenham Current it is always a busy annual event.

“This is probably the favourite time of the year for us,” Cogghe said.

“Compared to a normal day, we almost double the amount of crew working today. It’s really busy, but we all work together and get through it. We work together as a team and everybody is happy. The team has done a really good job today. They just keep up the hard work and keep it going. Keep selling, keep getting donations coming it.”

Cogghe said the ‘McHappy Day’ fundraiser continues until they close on Wednesday night.

“We usually count it at the end of the day,” he said.

“We are punching in as we go and usually every hour we are. We sell the bags, the socks and the pencils. Socks are $5, the bags are $3 and the pencils are the $1. So far we are doing about $200 to $400 an hour, with just those. So those are doing pretty good. Everybody seems to be pretty excited.”

Cogghe said they have had a steady stream of volunteers helping out as well.

“So far we have had the fire department come in, we have some of the police officers coming in, we had some people from Community Living,” he said.

“They are doing a great job selling everything. I can’t even remember how much they sold, they sold so much. They are doing a great job.”

Goals and expectations were exceeded last year, as $19,150 was raised at restaurants in Chatham and Wallaceburg.

A final total for this year will be known following the event.
