Trailer goes up in flames at Wildwood Park

On Monday morning, firefighters from Station #11 responded to a trailer fire in Wildwood Park.

Chatham-Kent Fire Department officials say when crews arrived they encountered heavy flames coming from a trailer and it extended to the attached wood awning.

The fire was quickly knocked down and there was no injuries.

There was extensive damage to the trailer and awning, estimated at $30,000.

With summer right around the corner, Chatham-Kent Fire & Emergency Services is reminding residents about the importance of fire safety in their ā€˜home-away-from-homeā€™.

ā€œTragedies can happen anywhere ā€“ cottage, trailer, RV, etc. itā€™s necessary to be protected from fire and carbon monoxide ā€“ just like your home,ā€ stated Assistant Chief Chris Case.

ā€œAnd remember alarms donā€™t last forever. They need to be replaced as per manufacturerā€™s instructions ā€“usually every 10 years.ā€

Minimize your risk from fire by following these safety guidelines:

Careful Cooking

Often kitchens are cramped with tiny amounts of counter space. Therefore we must be extra careful when preparing our meals. Keep the stove area clear and never leave a burner on when not present.

Prepare An Exit Strategy

Have two ways out. Take time to look at your windows and make sure they are easy to open. Practice your exit, and make sure that everyone knows what to do.

Check Your Propane Systems

It is important to keep appliances clean and maintained. One of the most common causes of RV/mobile home fires is the propane refrigerator. Check for nests and or built up debris near the fridgeā€™s gas burner.

Donā€™t Overload Electrical Circuits

Never plug too many things into one outlet, especially high draw appliances or heaters. Extension cords should only be used temporarily.
