Most people have heard of the Ten Commandments, even if they cannot name them all.
The 5th commandment, found in Exodus 20:12 says, “Honour your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the LORD your God is giving you.”
Mothers’ Day can be a tough day for some people.
You may have lost your mom in the past year, or recent years, and the day strikes hard at the loneliness that lies in your heart.
For some, the pain of a bad childhood experience with your mother, or being a woman who does not have children, may also make this an awkward day for you. Nevertheless, the Bible commands us to show honour to our mom and we can still find ways to do that, even if circumstances are not ideal.
My mom turned 80 this past fall and she has been a widow for the past 29 years.
I have two brothers and we are married with our own families and have not lived at home for more than 28 years.
Connecting with my mom throughout the year is very important to her, and Mothers’ Day is especially meaningful.
In this day of social media, texting, and email, the oft-forgotten phone call is likely the most cherished contact a mom could receive on Mothers’ Day, if you are far away.
Make that phone call and don’t count the cost of the long distance, either!
Your mom is worth it and she will appreciate the chat. Of course, if you live near your mom, by all means, go for a special visit.
This may or may not include a special meal, either at a restaurant or something you and your family prepare.
The food is not really the main issue here, it is the precious time spent with this beloved woman in your life.
Whatever you decide to do on this day, remember that your efforts will be seen by the Lord, and He will be pleased!
