Update: Investigation continues after fatal crash

As previously reported, on Friday at 1:16 p.m. emergency crews responded to a two vehicle collision on Longwoods Road between Zone Road 6 and Zone Road 7.

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials say initial investigation has revealed that the driver of the Toyota Camry was allegedly travelling westbound on Longwoods Road when he crossed the center line into the oncoming path of a Freightliner truck carrying a load of granular fertilizer.

As a result of the collision, the fuel tank ruptured on the truck, spilling approximately 75L of diesel fuel onto the roadway.

The driver of the truck, a 58-year-old man from Lambton County was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

He was treated and released.

The driver of the car, a 58-year-old Chatham man was pronounced deceased at the scene.

His name will not be released as per the family’s request.

Longwoods Road between Zone Road 6 and Zone Road 7 will remain closed for the remainder of the weekend for repairs.

The collision remains under investigation by the Traffic Management Unit.
