Take time to smell the flowers

By Glen Turner – Special to the Sydenham Current

There was an expression in the 60’s that said: “Take time to smell the flowers”… or words to that effect.

And, the older I get, the more I realize how accurate that is!

It is indeed the little things that make life wonderful.

Like sitting on my front porch, with a coffee of freshly ground beans, with my book, and my dog.

Like working the soil and planting flowers to the sounds of the birds around me.

Like a quiet afternoon backyard bonfire, with my book, my dog and an iced tea.

Like working the soil and planting my veggie garden.

Like a quiet drift on the river in my boat, engine off, and watching and listening to the sounds of the huge variety of wildlife.

Like driving out into the country, just to get out of town.

Like the joys of a quiet, well-prepared meal, with no distractions at all.

Like reading in bed, with my dog and two cats cuddled up with me.

Like sitting in the yard, and watching the baby rabbits play, and listening to the sounds of the baby birds demanding to be fed. 🙂

I used to be a big city boy, and grew up in the hustle and bustle of city living (Ottawa) – not any more!

I could never ever handle the noise, the rush, the striving, and the pace of city life.

Take the time. Smell the flowers.

It’s wonderful!
